F.A.Q
  • Q: My router does not work with my ADSL connection
A: It is probable that your ADSL modem is performing some routing functions which conflict with the router. If you have tried the setup instructions that came with the router and can't get it to work, try the technique below.

Instructions for using the Wireless-G Router as a Wireless Access Point/Bridge when used with and existing ADSL Router

Note: Only use these instructions if you have already unsuccessfully tried configuring your router as per the Quick Installation Guide

  1. Connect your computer's network card to Port 1 on the Router (with a network cable). Make sure no other ports (including the WAN port) are connected. Also ensure that your modem is not connected to your computer with a USB cable.
  2. Ensure your computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP (as per the setup guide) and reboot your computer
  3. Go to a web browser. Access the address http://192.168.1.254
  4. You should get a logon screen. Username is root, password is 1234
  5. Next click on "Management" then click on "DHCP Settings"
  6. Disable the DHCP server check box and click apply changes
  7. Now for some recabling. Connect the modem's ethernet port to "port 2" on the router (Note: NOT the WAN port) with a network cable
  8. Reboot your modem, router and computer (in that order).

You should now be able to access the internet.

  • Q. My ADSL modem is currently connected to my computer with a USB cable. How do I set up my router?
    A. You will need to switch your modem over to the LAN or Ethernet port and your PC will need a network card if it doesn’t already have one. USB connections are not compatible with the Elements router.
  • Q: I have set up my router to work with an ADSL connection but now I cannot access the router’s configuration page.
A: Your ADSL modem is probably supplying IP addresses to your computers which are not compatible with the router’s IP Address. You will need to change the router’s address so that it is in the same subnet as the modem. To do this, follow the instructions below.

Firstly, we need to found out what IP address your modem is giving you

1. Go to Start/Run and type in cmd, then click OK. A Command prompt window should appear
2. Type ipconfig then hit enter. This should reveal the IP address of your computer (a.b.c.d).
3. Take note of this address.

Now change the IP address of your computer.

1. Go to control panel, network connections and access the properties of your LAN connection
2. Access the properties of the TCP/IP protocol and change your IP address to 192.168.1.100, subnet mask 255.255.255.0

You should now be able to configure your router
1. Go to http://192.168.1.254 and login to the router
2. Go to LAN Settings and change the IP Address of the router to a.b.c.111 (where a.b.c were obtained from your computer's Ip Address)
3. Apply the changes

Go back to the properties of your LAN connection and change back to obtain IP Address automatically.

Reboot everything and your router should now be configurable on http://a.b.c.111

  • Q: I’ve set up my router for Bigpond Cable as per the supplied instructions but it is still not working.
A: There are a couple of possible reasons for this:
  1. Your username or password is not entered correctly in the router. Bigpond usernames are usually in the form username@bigpond.net.au but check with Telstra for the correct format.
  2. Your Bigpond Cable logon client is still running. It should either be completely uninstalled or disabled for the router to work properly. To disable it search for the file bpcable.exe on your computer and rename it to bpcable1.exe (it is usually located in C:\Program Files\Telstra\Cable Login\). You can easily re-enable it by renaming it back to bpcable.exe, although once your router is working you should probably remove it completely.
  3. Give it time. Telstra’s servers can take up to 20 minutes to recognize newly installed hardware so power everything off and wait 30 minutes before trying again
  4. Telstra is gradually phasing out the Cable logon client and you may have been switched over to the newer (simpler) system. If so, use the router’s setup wizard to reconfigure your router as a DHCP client (instead of Bigpond)
  • Q: I’m connected to Optus Cable and I’ve installed my router but the internet is not working.
A: Power down and restart your cable modem. Until this is done the cable connection will not recognize the router.
  • Q: My desktop computer works fine with the router but my wireless laptop cannot see any wireless networks when I try to connect.
A: Check your laptop documentation to find out how to turn on the wireless connection. Most laptops have their wireless antenna turned off by default
  • Q: How do I set up security?
A: To set up your wireless encryption.
  1. Connect to your wireless configuration pages (usually http://192.168.1.254 unless you have changed the router’s IP address).  Goto Wireless in the router config and choose Security
  2. There are a number of encryption schemes you can use but the one I find easier is WPA(TKIP). Select this in the Encryption box.
  3. WPA Authentication mode should be set to Personal, Key Format should be ASCII
  4. Set the Pre-shared key to anything you want (minimum 5 characters). This is basically your wireless password.
  5. Click Apply Changes and wait for the router to reset
  6. You are now ready to connect with your laptop. Right-click you wireless connection in the system tray and choose View Available Wireless networks
  7. Fine the Wireless-G router network and double-click on it
  8. Enter the key and you should be online. If you are not prompted you may have to first go through the Advanced Network Setting (the link should be on the left of the page) and remove all references to the Wireless-G Network.

An alternate and simpler security measure is to use Access Control which allows you to restrict wireless access to specific computers

  1. Find out your wireless computer’s MAC (or physical) address. To do this go to the Start Menu and choose Run, type cmd and click OK. This opens a command prompt
  2. In the command prompt type IPCONFIG /ALL and hit enter
  3. Find the section that refers to your wireless connection and write down the physical address (a 12 character string separated by dashes)
  4. Connect to your wireless configuration pages (usually http://192.168.1.254 unless you have changed the router’s IP address).  Goto Wireless in the router config and choose Access Control
  5. Choose “Allow Listed” in the Access Control Mode box
  6. Type the 12 character physical address (without the dashes)  obtained from step 3 into the MAC address box
  7. Click Apply Changes

Your wireless network is now restricted to the machine with the physical address you have specified. Addition computers can be added to the network by adding in their MAC addresses to the access control list.

Note: Access Control does not affect computers that are cabled directly into the router.

  • Q: How do I upgrade the firmware.
A: Download the firmware file SW-0BFGWR85-F3_web-linux(20060623).img  to your hard disk
Go to the Upgrade Firmware page (Management->Upgrade Firmware).
    Upload the "SW-0BFGWR85-F3_web-linux(20060623).img".
The board will restart . Check the firmware version is 1.2.3.6B

DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER TO YOUR ROUTER DURING THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE PROCESS

The router will then have to be reconfigured.
